How to Master Your Music for Free
Mastering is the final step in music production. It's what gives your tracks their final sound, ready for distribution on all platforms.
Traditionally, mastering costs between $50 and $200 per track. But today, free solutions exist.
What is Audio Mastering?
Mastering is the process of:
- Optimizing loudness (perceived volume)
- Balancing frequencies (final EQ)
- Adding cohesion (compression, limiting)
- Preparing for distribution (format, metadata)
Mastering vs Mixing
| Mixing | Mastering |
|---|---|
| Works on individual tracks | Works on the stereo mix |
| Balances instruments together | Optimizes the overall sound |
| Creative and artistic | Technical and precise |
| Several hours per track | 30 min to 1h per track |
The LUFS Standard: Why It's Crucial
What is LUFS?
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is the standard measurement of perceived volume. Unlike dB, LUFS takes into account how the human ear perceives sound.
Standards by Platform
| Platform | Target LUFS | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | -14 LUFS | Most widespread standard |
| Apple Music | -16 LUFS | More dynamic |
| YouTube | -14 LUFS | Same as Spotify |
| Deezer | -14 LUFS | Same as Spotify |
| Tidal | -14 LUFS | Same as Spotify |
Why -14 LUFS?
Spotify automatically normalizes all tracks to -14 LUFS. If your track is louder, it will be turned down. If it's quieter, it will be turned up.
⚠️ Warning: A track crushed to -8 LUFS will lose dynamics once normalized to -14 LUFS. Better to master directly at -14 LUFS.

Mastering Mistakes to Avoid
❌ The Loudness War
Excessively compressing to be "louder" destroys dynamics and fatigues listeners. With Spotify normalization, it's become counterproductive.
❌ Over-Compression
Excessive compression creates a flat, lifeless sound. Keep at least 8 dB of dynamic range.
❌ Neglecting True Peak
Make sure your True Peak stays below -1 dBTP to avoid distortion during MP3/AAC encoding.
❌ Mastering a Bad Mix
Mastering cannot fix a bad mix. "Fix it in mastering" is a myth.
Checklist Before Distribution
Before sending your track to platforms, verify:
- LUFS between -14 and -12
- True Peak below -1 dBTP
- No audible clipping
- Dynamic Range > 6 dB
- Format WAV 16-bit/44.1kHz minimum
- Metadata filled in
