Create a Professional EPK: Step-by-Step Tutorial for Musicians

How to create a professional EPK

Your EPK (Electronic Press Kit) is your musician's CV. It's the document that bookers, journalists, and labels look at before responding to you.

A bad EPK = ignored email. A great EPK = open door.

What is an EPK?

An EPK is a digital press kit that brings together everything a music professional needs to know about you:

  • Who you are
  • What you do
  • What it sounds and looks like
  • How to reach you

Essential elements

1. Biography

Prepare three versions:

  • Short (50 words): For social media and concert programs
  • Medium (150 words): For the EPK and booking applications
  • Long (300+ words): For press and interviews

Writing rules:

  • Write in the third person ("The band X..." not "We are...")
  • Lead with the most impactful info (not "Founded in 2019 in London...")
  • Mention key achievements: notable gigs, streams, awards, collaborations
  • End with the current project (upcoming album, tour, etc.)

2. Photos

You need:

  • 1 portrait photo (square format, Spotify profile style)
  • 1 horizontal promo photo (16:9, for banners and articles)
  • 2-3 live photos (show your stage energy)

Technical specs:

  • Minimum resolution: 300 dpi for print, 72 dpi for web
  • Format: JPG (photos) or PNG (logos)
  • Size: at least 2000px on the longest side

3. Music

  • 2-3 representative tracks (not your entire discography)
  • Streaming links: Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud
  • 1 downloadable track (MP3 320kbps or WAV)
  • If possible: 1 live video (even a smartphone is fine if the sound is good)

4. Technical information

  • Tech rider: list of equipment needed on stage
  • Stage plot: layout of musicians and gear
  • Set duration: format(s) offered (30min, 45min, 1h, 1h30)
  • Number of musicians on stage
  • Website / artist page
  • Social media (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok)
  • Booking email (dedicated, not your personal email)
  • Phone number (optional)

Best practices

  • PDF: 4-6 pages max, clean design
  • Web page: private or public URL (easier to update)
  • File size: < 10 MB for email sending

What to avoid

  • Blurry or low-resolution photos
  • A 3-page bio
  • Every song since your debut
  • Superlatives ("the best band in the scene")
  • Cluttered design
